Focus on Forestry First Ltd is a not for profit social enterprise company established in September 2016. It developed out of a WG/EU funded project managed by mwmac Ltd between January 2010 & July 2015.

The company remit is to support firms within the Welsh Trees & Timber sector to access skills, plan staff development and increase the qualification levels of operators within the sector.

Over the years, Ecological Land Management Ltd has benefitted greatly from the funding that has been available from FFF, helping the business to grow and develop. During the period running up to June 2015, ELM have managed to train up nearly all our staff on basic tickets including Woodchippers, brushcutters, clearing saws, felling small trees and ATV driving. Having all the staff fully trained means that work planning is much simpler and we can send out more teams at the same time. FFF have also contributed to the higher level chainsaw certificates namely Tree climbing & Ariel Rescue and Using Chainsaw from Rope & Harness. Both of these courses would have been very expensive without assistance from FFF so we at ELM are very grateful for this opportunity which must have also had a positive impact on the Industry as a whole.

I am happy to confirm that as a direct result of the quality of this training I have now tendered for work with both the RSPB and NRW resulting in a significant amount of work for both myself and Sam. This is ideal because it has enabled me to fill a gap at a time of year that otherwise is very quiet and has in effect turned my business from a seasonal one into one that will run throughout the year and in doing so hopefuly will enable me to expand and therefore create more employment.
