Overview
This Half-Day (3-hour) online course builds on the foundation provided in the Forest Works Manager (FWM) Awareness course, offering a focused and practical exploration of risk assessment and emergency planning in the forestry sector.
Designed for forestry managers, supervisors, and contractors, the course develops essential knowledge and tools for conducting eAimffective planned and dynamic risk assessments, and for creating robust, site-specific emergency plans that respond to the changing and hazardous nature of forestry worksites.
Delivered in a live, interactive webinar format, the course uses real-life case studies and industry best practice from the Forest Industry Safety Accord (FISA) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). It also explores the behavioural side of safety management — helping participants build a stronger safety culture within their teams and organisations.
Aim
To provide forestry professionals with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to plan, conduct, and adapt effective risk assessments and emergency plans, in line with FISA and HSE guidance — with a focus on dynamic conditions, communication, and team-wide safety culture.
Objectives
At the end of the course the participant will have an understanding of:
The role of risk assessment and emergency planning in forestry, including the legal framework and relevant industry guidance from FISA and HSE.
The key components of a planned risk assessment, including how to identify hazards, assess risks, apply appropriate control measures, and maintain effective documentation.
The purpose and process of dynamic risk assessment, including when it is needed, how to carry it out in the field, and how to make safe decisions under changing conditions.
The essential elements of an emergency plan, including site-specific considerations, communication protocols, and incident reporting requirements under RIDDOR.
The principles of fostering a strong safety culture, including the importance of proactive communication, shared responsibility, and leadership in forestry operations.
