Overview

This course is designed for participants responsible for supervising and/or managing sites where debogging or recovery of forest machinery may occur. The aim is to equip participants with the knowledge necessary to oversee the recovery of machines that have become bogged down (‘debogging’), immobile or have tipped over (‘recovery’) during forestry, tree work and other land-based occupations, pulling with a winch or another machine.

Objectives

At the end of the course the participant will have an understanding of:

• Safety requirements and regulations in relation to de-bogging and/or recovery, including PPE;

• The implications of PUWER in relation to the inspection and use of de-bogging and/or recovery equipment;

• The requirements of Risk Management, communication between operators, choice of system, including safe working zones for personnel, interaction with other machines and contingency planning;

• Selection of appropriate winch or machine and anchorage points. Ancillary equipment and attachment to effect de-bogging and/or recovery (including righting a tipped or rolled over) casualty machine;

• The calculations, using established methods for likely forces that need to be applied to enable de- bogging, recovery and righting a machine that has tipped or rolled over, including the effect of multiplication of forces using pulley systems;

• Setting up rigging equipment for safe de-bogging and/or recovery of casualty machine, including righting a that has tipped or rolled over casualty. Ensure machines are in safe position when de-bogging or recovery completed;

N.B: The course is not intended to be a substitute for using large recovery machines provided by professional recovery firms brought in when the task is too big for in-house or locally available machinery.

Instructor

Chris Hughes

Chris Hughes has an extensive background in rural land-based industries, encompassing roles in research, development, and marketing within agriculture, as well as practical work in woodland contracting and land management. Since 1985, he has been dedicated to training and assessing in countryside management, working through respected organisations like NPTC City & Guilds, Lantra Awards.

As a Director of mwmac Ltd, Chris has undertaken various key projects, such as conducting a Wales-wide survey of forestry contracting resources and collaborating on a Welsh Government project to support contractor training in forestry. His commitment to enhancing skills and training programs is evident in his continuous efforts to meet the needs of the evolving land-based sector and maintain high standards in health and safety, business, and environmental management.

Chris has held various positions as both Instructor and Assessor such as Training standards Officer for FASATCo, Regional Verifier for NPTC, Training standards Verifier for Lantra Awards, Technical Standards Verifier NPTC City & Guilds (Forestry and Plant machinery).

Who should attend?

• Existing Forestry Works Managers, Site Supervisors, Team Leaders, Managers within Forestry

• Forestry contractors wishing to understand their responsibilities on site

• Participants do not need to be competent in the use of the machinery and/or equipment, however they must understand the work being undertaken and the competencies required of the operators and contractors.

• It is recommended that participants have a good understanding of their role as contract manager within the workplace, i.e. Supervisor, Manager, Forestry Works Manager, etc.

It is strongly suggested that the participants have attended a (Forest) Works Manager Awareness course before attending this event.

• Refreshments will be provided but please bring a packed lunch.

• The course will include visiting site in a forestry and woodland environment.

• The ground will be uneven so there will be a need to wear PPE suitable for outdoor visits appropriate to the conditions and weather.
