Overview

This one-day training course is designed for individuals who supervise or manage forestry operations and are responsible for ensuring environmental protection on site. It is suitable for Forestry Works Managers, Site Supervisors, Contractors, Environmental Supervisors, and others with responsibility for managing staff, contractors, or standing sales operations.

The course provides a structured overview of environmental roles, responsibilities, and practical management approaches within forestry operations. It combines classroom-based learning, discussion, case studies, and group exercises to support understanding of environmental legislation, regulatory expectations, and industry best practice.

The training scope for this course was developed by the Forest Industry Environmental Management Group (FIEG) in partnership with the FISA Forestry Works Manager Working Group. It is based on the CONFOR-published Guidance on Responsibilities for Environmental Protection in Forestry (GREPF) and aligns with the UK Forestry Standard.

Objectives

At the end of the course the participant will have an understanding of:

  • The legislative and regulatory framework for environmental protection in forestry

  • Defined roles and responsibilities of duty holders, including Forestry Works Managers and Environmental Supervisors

  • How to commission and supervise competent personnel for environmental responsibilities

  • Key environmental protection areas and associated risks within forestry operations

  • Licensing, permissions, and consent requirements

  • Environmental standards, monitoring, and site supervision

  • Environmental incident response, reporting, and emergency planning

Other Information

  • Refreshments will be provided but please bring a packed lunch.

    The course will include visiting site in a forestry and woodland environment.

  • The ground will be uneven so there will be a need to wear PPE suitable for outdoor visits appropriate to the conditions and weather.
